My name is "Rocky".  As my name implies, I am a Super Dog, at least that's what my foster mom says about me.  My original owner gave me up to a shelter.  He told the shelter he couldn't afford to feed me or take me to the doctor for my annual exams any more.  Everyone at the shelter liked me and took very good care of me.  Happily, VGSR heard about me and found me a foster home.  One of my current doggie roommates is rather dominate. Her name is Briana.  When I first met her, I played it cool and let her be the boss.  Her mother, just observed us as she is a laid back 11 year old German Shepherd.  Happily, we three are all buddies now and have a merry ole time playing together.  When I first met my foster mom's cat, guess what?  I gave her a kiss, yea, I do like cats!

I am a gentleman on a leash, know how to sit, down, lie next to the dinner table without begging, love car rides and toys..  I love to swim and am quite good.  Briana and I have fun in the water retrieving tennis balls.

My family thinks I'm quite handsome, just take a look at my pictures.  I'm healthy and in great shape!

Rosa is a wonderful fun loving young adult, long haired GSD.   Not only is she beautiful but she has the personality to match.   Rosa is a great family girl who likes to hang out with her humans and be in the middle of everything.   She wants to please her human family and also she loves to play with her GSD foster brother.   She has plenty of energy and can run with the best!   She can go to the park and run for hours or, happily, will lie on the floor and take it easy!

Rosa is definitely the friend that you will want to come home to everyday!   She is a very loving and sensitive girl. She loves her toys and currently lives with both a small dog and a GSD in her foster home.   Rosa is a ham and loves having her picture taken also!   Rosa is going to fill the void anywhere she goes and will be a velcro girl!   Rosa should have at least a five foot fence when playing outside as she has been known in the past to be a jumper!   Rosa needs a forever home with some shepherd experience as she will need continued work on her training and social skills.

Rosa is a great girl so if you think you would consider her for your family and are an approved adopter with Virginia German Shepherd Rescue contact her foster mom at    sandal@frontiernet.net     MSWV

Sabra

Sabra
Gender: Female
Age: 7 Years
Color: Black and Tan
Weight: 95 lbs.
House-trained: Yes
Crate-trained: No
Special Needs: No
Microchipped: Yes
Neutered/Spayed: Yes
Good with Dogs: Yes
Good with Cats: Unknown
Good with Kids: Yes
Fostered in: Fairfax, Virginia
VGSR Tag # 2621

Sabra is a very sweet dog. She loves to put her paw on your arm and give kisses. She spends much of the time laying around the house. She was not very energetic when I first got her, but she has become more and more playful as she has become more comfortable. Sabra is the first dog who has walked slower than I have during walks. She perks right up, though when she spots another dog or small animal. Occasionally, she will react to other dogs, but we are working on her impulse control. The more tired she is, though, the less attention she pays to other dogs.  In general, she does well with big dogs but not small ones. She does pretty well off leash once she bonds with her person and follows me virtually everywhere. She sleeps at the foot of the bed and wakes me in the morning when it is time to go out.

Sabra does not like to be crated. The one time I crated when I went to work, she broke out and had an accident in the house. Ever since, I have let her roam the house while I am at work, and she has not had another accident. She will get into the garbage if she has access to it, so I put it in the closet while away. In her previous home, Sabra had many more accidents, got into the garbage, and stole food off the counter. She has not done any of these things more than once. She is good at letting me know when she needs to go out, pawing at me and barking in a relatively high pitch. She is always very excited to see me when I get home from work. She chews only on her toys and is getting used to her crate as a safe place. She does not like to be groomed. She is good with visitors after she is introduced to them.

Sabra would probably adapt well to any environment and would be an ideal choice for apartment-dwellers looking for a less-active dog. She brings toys over shen she wants to play and seeks affection when she wants it. She is a good dog for a first-time Shepherd owner and is a great companion. Approved adopters are invited to contact mikeclark2000@yahoo.com.   CMVA

My name is Salena and I am just a sweetie of a girl!!  My owners moved after many years and did not take me, so

VGSR stepped in to help me.  I follow my foster Mom everywhere and am very obedient.  I am a proud graduate of a

formal obedience academy, with 99% average!  I take treats nicely, and am very gentle.  I love car rides, to be petted,

and love the other dogs in my foster home.  I never met food I didn’t like and as a result I am very chubby!!  I am

currently on "doggy weight watchers" but the extra weight goes away slowly. (Just like humans)! I need a home

dedicated to giving me short walks every day and can let me be with my people  lots of the time. My foster Mom

walks me without a leash and I do like to run in the woods and the field, so don’t let my age fool you.  I’m pretty

spunky and once I’m the canine biggest loser—at the right weight—I will be more stunning than  I am already. I was

very upset when my people moved and left me, so I still need to have a human around lots of the time or I get

anxious.

Sammy is a beautiful 1 ½ year old shepherd mix. She is currently about 40 pounds and is the perfect lap size. She loves to cuddle and is a real sweetheart who didn’t deserve to be abandoned in a shelter. Prior to coming to the shelter she was left alone in a kennel with no one to play with. Sammy is easy to walk on the leash, housebroken, very gentle and affectionate. She has a cheerful demeanor, a very loving and devoted nature. She wants to be near you and will follow you like a shadow.  She loves to play and does well with other dogs. She would love her own home with her own toys and warm place to curl up with her new family. Please contact Alison at amp10q@gmail.com  if you have a place for this lovely girl.

Sasha is a wonderful girl. She is a 3 year old black and red GSD with an incredible ball drive.  She will play ball as long as you will throw it for her and then beg for more.  She is a very petite girl.  She loves attention and loves to snuggle on the floor with the kids, she will even snuggle on the bed if no mean ole big person is looking.

She is a bit snippy on the initial meeting with other dogs, however, and experienced hand or an off premises initial meeting seem to work pretty well.  She will be an awesome girl if she gets to be the only dog in the household or if she is introduced properly to the family pet, she has bonded with the other four here but it did take a bit of time.  SSuVA

Hello there!  I'm Savanna!  I am an owner give up, from Ruther Glen, Va.  I'm so excited, I'm ready to go, go, go!   My focus is my foster Mom, but when I'm with my adopted family, they will be my new focus.  I have a little separation anxiety, but I settle down in my crate.   I love to run in the house, hop on the sofa, give chase to the cats, but say the word and I'll stop.  I'm so excited I just don't remember, so I'll chase again.  I need to focus, I need training and plenty of exercise.  I love to go to the dog parks and run full speed.  I have a habit of trying to dominate, so I hump other dogs and I get on their nerves.  Just give me the word and I'll get off!  My foster Mom nicknamed me 'Savannah Fox' and I think it sounds good on me!  I jump a lot on foster Mom, and she's training me not to; teaching me 'down', 'sit', 'stay', and 'no'.   I'm always happy and excited and always ready for a walk.  And when you tell me to sit, I sit fast, waiting for the next activity.  At night when it's TV time, I cuddle with my foster Mom on her sofa and I settle down.  I'm excited to go for walks on leash and my foster Mom uses a prong collar, because I pull if I don't wear it.  But if I pull, the prong collar gives me the reminder.  I think I would do good with a 5 foot fence and a yard.  Foster Mom thinks I'm a blend of German Shepherd with a smaller breed, perhaps Spitz or Shetland Sheepdog?   But I've got mostly German Shepherd looks and the spunk of a tiny dog!  BNVA

Update 5/28/2010

Sidney is doing great. She’s a very happy girl, full of energy and just loving life. She is nothing like the critically ill girl that VGSR rescued back in February. She is currently undergoing physical therapy at the Veterinary Orthopedics Sports Medicine Group (VOSM) in Annapolis Junction, MD in an attempt to improve her range of motion. The orthopedic specialist did confirm the diagnosis of hip dysplasia but wants her to complete a physical therapy program before determining whether surgery is required. He did indicate that she is an excellent candidate for hip surgery and should not have any problems as she gets older provided that she does not become an overweight “couch potato.” That should not be a problem given Sidney’s energy level. She still is a “drama queen” and cries whenever she thinks her exercise has become too strenuous or thinks she is going to be examined. Her next doctor’s appointment is on June 8 and she should be ready to go to her “forever home” soon thereafter. By the way we’re still working on the cat issue and making progress. She wants to chase our cat but we don’t believe she would intentionally hurt Mr. Chubbs. Please consider giving this miracle dog a home. She will add much happiness and joy to your life. We would also greatly appreciate any donations to help defray her medical costs which already have run into thousands of dollars. If you have any questions or need more information about this beautiful girl, our email address is below.

Boy, does Sidney have a story to tell. She was an owner-surrender. Sidney had never been to a veterinarian in her entire life. At the time of her surrender, she weighed less than 45 pounds, her body temperature was 90 degrees (normal is 101), her blood pressure was almost unreadible and she could not walk or even lift her head. The owner asked that VGSR take her as she did not want Sidney to die in her house!!! She was rushed to a hospital by one of our dedicated volunteers. The doctors determined that she was near death and they did an extraordinary job saving her life. She was in critical condition for close to 48 hours.  She is now in her foster home enjoying a nice bed, three meals a day, receiving the necessary medical care and the love of her entire foster family. What a survivor!!!  If it was not for the dedication and prompt action by her rescuer, beautiful Sidney would have died that night and we never would have had the privilege of her being part of the VGSR family.

Sidney is a wonderful dog. She just adores people, loves playing with her toys and in little more than two weeks has become an important presence in our home. She is crate trained, house broken, has good manners, enjoys walks, gets along with children, is learning to get along with strange dogs and most of all just loves life. Sidney has gained close to ten pounds, remains a bit weak and long walks can be a struggle as she has little muscle tone but her prognosis is excellent. Sidney is getting stronger every day. So what was wrong with Sidney? It was a simple case of lack of proper medical care. Sidney had a severe case of whipworms that were in the process of killing her. The whole situation could have been avoided if her former owners had only taken her to the vet and treated her for whipworms (less that $100).

Sidney will be available for adoption as soon as she is back to full strength. If you’d like to meet her or have any questions please contact her foster family at pzgeaneas@earthlink.net   GPCVA

Ski came to us on Saturday, 4 September 2010, and is a wonderful boy!  He is quite handsome and loves to play!  He was owner surrendered, scheduled to be put to sleep unless a home was committed to take him by 3 September.  Of course we couldn’t pass him by!  He is a joy to have in our home! He knows some basic obedience, “sit, down, come, no” and a short “stay”.  He came to our home that already has 3 dogs and a cat that we rescued and is fitting in well.  Our cat Tim seems very indifferent to him and Ski just seems a bit curious about the cat.  Ski sniffs him and whines a little, kind of like, “why don’t we play!”  He is learning to stay off the kitchen counters; occasionally he will put his front feet up but quickly gets down when we say “no” or “Get down”.  He loves being close to his foster mom and dad. He had a little bit of problem with bladder control, he tends to drip urine a little and it seems to increase if he is stressed. It has decreased some from the first day we received him. This will be evaluated by the vet this week. He is crated trained, will whine when he needs to go out, and just enjoys being close.  According to his prior owner, a 10 year old child was in the house with zero issues. He loves belly rubs, playing with our other dogs and going for long walks.

We will have more to come as we spend more time with him!  For more information about Ski please contact

Look into my eyes.  Look deep into my eyes.  Hi! I’m Smokey. I love to play, I’m quick and smart. House trained? You bet - I will let you know when it is time for a walk.  Car rides?  Let’s go!  Leash skills? Working on it. I’m good until I see a fellow canine and then I pull because I want to say, “Hi, let’s play!”  I have many talents. To name a few: ‘sit’, ’down’, ‘come’, ‘stay’ and ‘shake’.  I’m great with other dogs and did I mention that I love to play?  I like cats and am very kid friendly.  I enjoy toys and I REALLY like puzzle balls filled with treats.   Belly rubs and ear scratches are awesome.  I return the love with kisses.  I don’t even mind being bathed.  Thunderstorms? Not a fan, but will find my own place to duck and cover until it passes.  Do you enjoy hitting the ‘snooze’ button?  Well, I can help with that.  After the alarm goes off and you hit ‘snooze’, I spring to action.  I bump your hand or poke your nose with mine – I know you are awake and can scratch my ears!  I will help you keep your kitchen clean, too.  Really! I am just trying to help. You didn’t leave that delicious food on the counter for me?  Sigh, I’ve learned that the counters are not mine.  I will still let you know if you’ve forgotten to put your food away, though.  Ready to play? If you must have a "perfect" dog, then pass on by, good luck but keep moving. Trooper's ears aren't fully erect, he's scared of strangers and (over) compensates by barking at them, and he's been known to mark.  But, he's learned to crate and has been being pretty good with the housetraining.  Although he's scared of strangers he will take treats from them nicely and he gives his trust pretty easily.  He's young, only recently neutered, and he lived a fairly isolated life in rural West Virginia.  So he's not a dog for first time owners or those who expect perfection right from the start.  With some patience, training, love, and assurance he will develop into a wonderful dog.  He shared a home with 6 cats and wanted to play and chase but never hurt anyone.  Trooper's foster home can be reached at vadogrescue@aol.com. My name is Wynne (pronounced Winnie). I came from West VA with all my brothers and sisters. I'm learning the ropes at my foster home and its been loads of fun. Lots of doggies to play with and learn from. I don't like the crate and right now am sleeping with my foster dad in a big queen size bed. My foster mom says I'm being spoiled. But, she also says sleep is important and where ever I make the less noise is where I get to sleep. I just conquered the steps going up and down today. I use to get stuck at the top and couldn't figure out how to get back down. But that's all changed now. My foster parents say I'm really smart and deserve a good home. So, if your looking for a special pet to love, I'm your girl.  LTVA

Am I cute or what?  Not only are my looks adorable but my foster mom says my personality is too!   I LOVE to wrestle with my other furry GSD’s in the house.  When I’m not wrestling, I’m either playing with my ball, or just hanging out.  I am a stray so my foster mom does not know much about my history. I did not know my indoor manners so my foster mom has been teaching me proper behavior.  I was also heartworm positive, but I’ve had my treatments and am healthy now.  My foster mom thinks I’d be great at agility since I can spring leaps & bounds and am quick like a lightning rod.  Oh, and did I tell you I was smart?  My foster mom says I’m super smart.  Because I love my furry friends as much as I love my human friends, my foster mom hopes to find me a home that is looking for a playmate.  I do test my boundaries though, so I need a home with leadership that can guide me with proper direction.  If you have been approved for adoption and want to know more about me, please contact my foster mom at crholen@hotmail.com. Hi, my name is Zoey and I am a petite and shy little puppy. I was born on September 11, 2009; so my 1st birthday is right around the corner. I am a special little girl, who LOVES car rides, hiking, swimming, toys and other dogs. I can be a little rambunctious, so I would be better off with a family who has younger dogs. I am also very smart. I know several basic obedience commands such as "stay, sit, come, down, leave it, and wait". I am also crate trained and housebroken. I have to admit I am a little bit nervous and shy around strangers, but once I get to know you I am always right by your side. I would also do really well with a family who is very active, has older children and can devote a lot of time with me. If you are interested in me, please contact my foster mom and dad at kcoski@comcast.net.
